The Ten Wonderful Ways of Communication
.Listen without Interrupting. Quiet listening shows respect for others and humility within yourself. If you love someone, listen more! “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
.Speak without Accusing. Do not form a habit of accusing others, especially before you know the full story. When people make mistakes, what they long for most is acceptance rather than blame, just as you hope for when you err. If you love someone, do not accuse! “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak.”
.Give without Sparing. Do not turn down others’ requests. Do not hesitate when you are able to help. If you help others today, they may help you tomorrow. Even if they fail you, your Father in heaven will reward you a hundredfold, for He sees all things. If you love someone, give freely! “The righteous give without sparing.”
.Pray without Ceasing. To love someone means more than giving material things. Love is not for show to outsiders, but a witness to your own heart. Pray for them often and continuously. If you truly love a person, you keep them in your heart. If you love them, pray for them constantly! “For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives.”
.Answer without Arguing. Harmony, not argument, sustains relationships. In families, people often defend themselves to prove they are right. When everyone strives to win an argument, conflict is inevitable. Debates rarely bring reconciliation; instead, they widen the gap between people. If you love someone, do not argue! “Better a small serving of vegetables with love than a fattened calf with hatred.”
.Share without Pretending. If you truly care about someone, share your authentic self with them. Do not wear a false mask to please them. Pretence will not deepen their affection for you. With time, it will erode their trust. Be true to yourself and hold fast to God’s truth. If you love someone, do not pretend! “Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.”
.Enjoy without Complaint. People easily fall into the trap of complaining: wives complain about husbands, parents about children, students about teachers, and bosses about subordinates. Everyone feels wronged, yet few stop to reflect: have I ever been the target of others’ complaints? Have I ever let someone down? Complaining never solves problems; it only magnifies small issues. It may release your frustration temporarily, but it narrows your mind and isolates you from others. If you love someone, stop complaining! “Do everything without grumbling or arguing.”
.Trust without Wavering. Often we lose our loved ones not because they are taken away, but because we push them away. This happens not from lack of care, but from excessive attachment. When you cling tightly to a person, interference increases while freedom fades; domination grows while trust diminishes; secrecy rises and communication declines. Love is responsibility rooted in trust, not bondage born of suspicion. “It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
.Forgive without Punishing. A mistake made by others does not always call for punishment. Your goal is their growth, not humiliation. Forgiveness can be more powerful than punishment, gentleness stronger than force. In old age, teeth fall out, yet the tongue remains intact. Never use others’ faults as an excuse for revenge. If you love them, forgive rather than punish. “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.”
.Promise without Forgetting. Keep your word. Do not make promises lightly if you cannot keep them. Those who love you care less about what you give them, and more about whether you honour your commitments. When you love someone, do not let their hopes fade. Unfulfilled expectations after long waiting will make them feel unimportant in your heart. If you love them, keep your promises. “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.”
